Minutes: General Membership Meeting July 4, 2008.
The meeting was called to order by President Steakley at 1102.

CONDUCTED OPENING CEREMONIES.
The Minutes from the General Membership meeting of June 6, 2008, were accepted as posted.
The BOD minutes of July 2, 2008, will be read under New Business.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Treasurer’s Report: Shipmate Moore absent (pending knee surgery). Report given by Shipmate
Steakley, and accepted as read.
Canteen Manager: Bill Moran. Report given. Accepted as read.
Youth Activities: Lady Gracey (LAFRA President) announced feeding program for malnourished children
to be held next week (7 - 11 June). LAFRA members will coordinate with local officials to feed children at
Barangay Day Care Centers.
Plan to revive Annual Youth Dart Tournament (16 years old and below) in September. Ex-Vice-Mayor,
Butch Echiverre will coordinate with LAFRA to host the tournament at branch home.
Monthly donation for Malnourished Children will be raised to P5,000.00. Money will be raised from
donations, raffles, etc….
Patriotism & Americanism: Shipmate Koeppen: Absent.
Hospital & Welfare: Shipmate Alvarez: Shipmate Jack Clark has been diagnosed with liver cancer that
has spread to other parts of his body. Members urged to visit Shipmate Clark. Prognosis – terminal. Also
reported condition of Harlan Saunders as terminal.
Retired Affairs: Shipmate Alvarez: US embassy Outreach scheduled for July 18, 2008. onboard SBMA.
Because of funding challenges, future outreaches may be at free locations (FRA, American Legion, etc.)
Public Affairs: Shipmate Wetzel: Absent.
Building and maintenance: Shipmate Brady: 2nd deck roof in urgent need of repairs. During last
typhoon, rainwater flooded office on ground floor. Shipmate Steakley has e-mailed owner (Stateside) to
obtain permission to deduct cost of repairs from monthly rent. Estimated cost of material and labor is
P17,000.00 Pesos.
Shipmate Tom Sturkie to replace Shipmate Brady as Building and Maintenance Chairman.
Membership: Shipmate Steakley (Standing in for Shipmate Simms): Active members: 156 in the alpha
roster but several new members do not reflect yet and several deaths (already reported to national) are
still carried.
UNFINISHED AND DEFERRED BUSINESS:

NEW BUSINESS:
1. Motion Alvarez, second Phillips to provide P1000 Pesos for the president’s contingency fund.
Unanimously approved.
2. Motion Phillips, second Mishenko to allocate up to P20,000.00 Pesos from Treasury to make
repairs on 2nd deck roof. Unanimously approved.
3. Motion Hazlewood, second Alvarez to accept Treasurer’s Report as read. Motion unanimously
approved.
COMMUNICATIONS TO BE READ: All correspondence from National and Northwest region will be posted
on the Read Board and only significant correspondence will be read. No correspondence read.
OLD BUSINESS: NTR
GOOD OF THE ORDER:
1. Discussed “native” covering for outside bar.
2. Discussed sliding window to be constructed adjacent to bar for easy access for customers to
place orders from outside.
3. LAFRA will host bingo at Branch Home beginning July 12, 2008.
4. LAFRA will host Ballroom Dancing at Branch Home on October 11, 2008. (Navy Birthday). Nothing
firm yet as to what Branch will do.
5. BZ to LAFRA for their participation in Nutrition Month parade hosted by Municipal Mayor
Lonzanida on July 1, 2008. Photos will be forwarded to National.
6. TriCare Area Office – Okinawa will establish a satellite office in Manila before the end of the year.
“Boots on the Ground” here in the Philippines will ensure more timely service.
7. Lifeline Medical Center will hold “Medical Outreach” in San Antonio sometime in September. FRA
and LAFRA will help coordinate and will provide venue at Branch Home.
8. KUDOS to kitchen and canteen staff for their outstanding support for the “pay per view” Pacquio
vs. Diaz fight on June 29th. Approximately 80 persons in attendance to watch the fight.
9. Annual Australian Vietnam Veteran’s Day (Long Tan) will be celebrated at Branch Home on August
18, 2008.
10. 50/50 winner: Shipmate Phillips. P900.00 to Malnourished Kids.
